Hamster Care

Essential Element in Knowing How to Care for a Hamster

Prior to owning a pet hamster, the essential elements in knowing how to care for it should be understood. Hamsters are naturally wild, rodents found in arid and semi-arid stony lands of Syria, Mongolia and Pakistan. Hamster should be kept warm, dry and in good cheer. Using an enclosed place to house hamsters is unsuitable as they tend to soon become moisture laden. Lodge a hamster in an airy cage preferably with tunnels and other equipment to cater to the hamster’s vivacity.

Important aspect of caring for a pet hamster is its well-being with special attention to availability of fresh water and the hamster’s food. Avoid using an open container for providing drinking water as it may topple, leaving the hamster feeling wet and miserable. The pre-packed staple food to be fed to your pet is readily available in the market. Yet, hamsters like to nibble at an assortment of food offered to them, like apple or carrot pieces, cookies and even some greens. It’s a necessary precautionary measure never to over feed them with such vegetables as they tend to cause an ailment called “Wet Tail”, which may ultimately prove lethal if timely medical help is not sought. Also, just like other rodents, hamsters are inherently accumulators of food. It would be only right to remove all left over titbits which may rot and cause foul smell and illness within their enclosures.

Hamsters love soft bedding. It will be wise indeed to add suitable bed linen. Soft wood shavings are great and if these are complemented with warm and cosy cover, like facial tissue, it will be an additional comforter for the mites. Providing the hamster with a silent, freely movable wheel, which can used to keep it feeling active, is important. Emphasis is laid on an easily workable, noiseless wheel as hamsters are nocturnal creatures and their nightly antics may disturb your sleep. Likewise, restrain yourself from disturbing its daytime sleep as it would only make it irritable and snappy. Do not be surprised if a cross hamster makes an attempt to gnaw your finger when you try reaching out for him. Encourage the pet hamster to frolic around as much as possible. This will keep the condition of mental lethargic state called”torpidity” at bay. A torpid hamster ends up looking languorous, sulky and behaving grouchy.

Once ready, a prospective pet owner can pick up a young, healthy hamster from a reasonably renowned pet store. After receiving satisfying answers to all your queries pertaining to the pet, go ahead and bring home your new buddy. For the first few days upon its arrival, the hamster may feel out of place and subdued. Given time, it will adapt to its new environs and begin to feel and look comfortable. Bearing in mind the elements of knowing how to care for hamster you can soon become adept at handling your pet worthy of all your affection which will be adequately reciprocated.
