Buying A New  Hamster - How Much Does It Cost to Take Care of A Hamster?

Unsure where and how to begin? You may be under the misconception that buying a new hamster and caring for it is costly. A few tips may help you.

Hamster Shopping List:

  1. A cage - Hamsters need a place of their own. Hamster cages can be purchased from a pet store, are different in size and the material used for their construction. Make sure to buy a safe cage so that your pet does not get entangled in it or within it and hurt itself.
  2. Bedding – Hamster likes to cuddle up and stay warm, it is imperative to get suitable bed linen for the pet you plan to buy. Bed linen serve diverse purposes. Bed linen cover the cage bottom, sop off the bad smell and perform the function of providing a toilet or a hiding place for the hamster. There is a wide variety of material used for hamster bedding. These days you have the option to get deliciously smelling bedding. Another cheaper version of bed linen made of paper can also be had. The pet owner may place small pieces of toilet paper in the cage which the hamster can use for covering itself or for sprucing up its enclosure.
  3. Food dish - It is advisable to buy your hamster a heavy ceramic food dish that the hamster may not chomp up.
  4. Water bottle – This article is a must because a hamster cannot topple it. Care to be taken to place it at an elevation so that the hamster does not gnaw at its plastic.
  5. Hamster mix – These are inexpensive and important, providing the required amount of calories. Be careful not to feed a hamster with rabbit food as that may be poisonous for it. Additionally, the requirement for calories and other nutrients can be provided by fresh fruits and vegetables.
  6. Hamster toys - These are the most enjoyable part of shopping for a hamster comprising mainly of a wheel. A hamster uses it for exercising. A hamster ball, a vast array of tubes, tunnels and chewable toys are real fun to pick and choose. The latter item may be added later as they carry less priority. If at the beginning you cannot afford fun toys, use toilet paper rolls into which you can pierce with holes to add excitement to your pet’s frolics. Use your imagination to spice up your pet’s life.
  7. Hamster book – They are necessary especially if you are a beginner. Such books contain important guidance regarding the nurturing of a pet hamster.

Important: Place a sand filled bowl inside a hamster’s cage which it will use to sand bathe and as its toilet too. Wash and replace this bowl daily. The bedding should be changed often. Once the accessories have been bought, the expenses are negligible thereafter. Buying a new hamster and the cost of caring for it is not too expensive.
